Two messages awaited when he arrived at the motel. One from his parents, the other from Haskins. He dialed his parents first. âHi, Mom. Itâs your delinquent son asking you not to tell him heâs a bad boy.â He didnât wait for an answer. âWhereâs Dad?â
âWe were so worried,â his mother said. âYour flying, Allan. I want you to give it up. Please, for me. The papers are always showing pictures of little planes in crashes. Joyce called when she heard you were alright. Your father and I have been over to help out. Nance and Craig are staying with us Saturday.â

âWhat?â
âIâm sorry Iâm so different from what you want.â
âLetâs not go into this again. Now that fate has brought you in contact with my people, maybe we can talk about it when youâre back here. Good-bye, son,â she said, then hung up.
Allan put the phone down, stepped out onto the balcony, and leaned against the railing. A family was having great fun in the pool. A child jumped into the water at the shallow end, ran up the steps, jumped in again, over and over. The father held another youngster, who wore water-wings and flailed her arms and legs. Suddenly he wished Nance and Craig were there.
Allan shivered as he thought about Haskins and his seemingly relentless determination. He felt the adrenaline coursing through him. He grabbed his notebook and wrote:
